Arrival in Arusha, where your Adventure Starts

From Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

  • Your mountain adventure starts with a transfer from Arusha to Momella Gate (1,500 m) in the stunning Arusha National Park.

  • After registering and acquiring permits, the trek begins through open grasslands and lush forests filled with unique wildlife, including giraffes, buffaloes, and a variety of bird species.

  • The trail gradually ascends to Miriakamba Hut (2,500 m), your first overnight stop.

  • The hut offers basic facilities and breathtaking views of Mount Meru’s crater, a dramatic reminder of the volcanic history of this iconic Tanzanian peak.

From Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

  • The trail leads through dense forests before reaching the iconic Elephant Ridge, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, with Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

  • Upon arrival at Saddle Hut, lunch will be served and you can take a well-deserved rest.

Acclimatization Hike to Little Meru

  • After lunch, embark on an acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820 m) and get rewarded with breathtaking views of both Mount Meru’s crater and the vast plains of northern Tanzania in the surrounding area.

Acclimatization hikes are moderate treks with gradual altitude gains, and help you adjust to reduced oxygen levels and prepare your body for higher altitudes, lowering the risk of altitude sickness. Beyond the physical benefits, these hikes also boost your mental readiness, so make sure to prioritize these hikes to enhance your chances of a successful, safe and more enjoyable and rewarding climbing experience.

Nightly Ascent to Socialist Peak (4,566 m)

  • Your summit push begins around midnight, under a blanket of stars.

  • The trail to Socialist Peak (4,566 m) is steep and rocky, requiring careful navigation in the dark.

  • As you ascend, the first light of dawn will illuminate the rugged terrain, guiding you toward the summit.

  • Upon reaching Mount Meru's summit, the second-highest mountain in Tanzania, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking sunrise over Mount Kilimanjaro and the vast plains of Africa.

  • Capture this unforgettable moment before starting your descent.

While descending is quicker, the trail can be quite steep and challenging, especially following the extended morning trek. Choose the right pace to manage the challenge.
